First aid is the immediate treatment or care given to someone suffering from an injury or illness until more advanced care is accessed or they recover. The aims of first aid are to:
  • preserve life
  • prevent illness or injury from becoming worse
  • relieve pain, if possible
  • promote recovery
  • protect the unconscious.
The provision of prompt and appropriate first aid can reduce the severity of an injury or illness; and in extreme cases, could mean the difference between life and death.

The Diocese strongly encourages churches to ensure a number of staff and volunteers are trained in the provision of first aid, and to support this by funding the training.

The Diocese does not directly run first aid training, but instead recommends the Provide First Aid 1 day course provided by St John SA. This course is offered over a wide range of times and locations, and includes CPR Certification, and is recognised by WorkSafe. This is the first aid training undertaken by Diocesan Office staff.
